Aluminium is popular because it is light.  However finer hooks made from aluminium can bend easily under stress and continued use

Finer hooks are usually made from steel.

Often the very large sizes are made from plastic to keep them lightweight. 

Carved bamboo hooks are also becoming increasingly popular and are lightweight.
